Description:

ISAAC HULL
(1773 - 1843) American naval officer who commanded the Constitution in its victory over the British warship Guerriere in the War of 1812. A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Boston, May 26, 1818 [1819, mis-dated according to dockets], to Senator Samuel Dana of Connecticut, in part: "...Today...received your letter of the 22nd inclosing draft on the New England Bank for give hundred Dollars. The money has been paid...When it is convenient for you to pay the remainder...There never was a more trying time for the merchants of Boston than the present. There must be some that will not be able to stand it...". The "trying time" Hull refers to was the Panic of 1819, the first major financial crisis of the nascent country, and the result of the depletion of the nation's specie. Boldly penned with integral address leaf and in very good condition, with just two small prior mounting traces to verso.
