Description:

IRISH-MADE SHORT LAND PATTERN "BROWN BESS" MUSKET
Smoothbore flintlock musket, 42" barrel, 58" overall, .75 caliber, a British Ordnance 1779 Short Land Pattern musket, a standard service weapon of the British Army from 1768-1797. This particular example was manufactured in Ireland at Dublin Castle, and bears that armory''s name inscribed into the rear of the lock plate, behind the cock. In front of the cock appears a somewhat crude crown over the initials "G R"(for "Georgius Rex"). The top of the barrel at the breech end bears the hand-inscribed numeral "6", as well as a second, smaller crown proof mark, and a third indistinct mark. The rifle bears a brass escutcheon plate at the top of the wrist, inscribed "B" and "No. 42". The walnut stock runs to 4 1/4" behind the muzzle, and is capped in brass, with four brass tubes for the uncut steel button-ended ramrod. The weapon lacks sights, although the bayonet lug at the muzzle could be used as a rudimentary front sight. The trigger guard and butt plate are also brass. The stock appears to have been refinished in the past, although it is regaining a nice patina. The stock was also badly broken and repaired at the wrist, beneath the lock plate, and at the muzzle end to the first sling swivel. The repairs were accomplished with small brass pins, and do not appear to be recent. The two foremost ramrod tubes are loose due to the aforementioned repairs. The forward sling swivel is also secured with a replacement screw, while the rear swivel bears its original pin. The lock plate bears some pitting, as does the breech end of the barrel, else very good.
