Description:

A fascinating photo album compiled by one Henri Poehlmann, 106pp. oblong folio, containing more than six hundred photographs accumulated during his travels throughout Europe the Pacific, and the United States in the years prior to World War II. While many of the images contained in the album are commercial postcard views of notable landmarks, the collection is also notable for its candid views of U.S. soldiers in pre-war Hawaii, along with scenes from a military review at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, civilians, landscapes, and many other scenes. Several images show an individual we believe to be Henri Poehlmann in a U.S. Army uniform, suggesting that he was stationed in Hawaii as a soldier The compiler's personal photos also include scenes from India, the Panama Canal, San Francisco, Dresden, New York, Rotterdam, and elsewhere. Most notably, the album includes eleven commercial images showing gruesome scenes from around Asia, including individuals with birth defects photographed in the Philippines; Chinese criminals executed by decapitation, electrocution and the "stretching death"; a stray dog feeding on a corpse; and victims of the Kanto Earthquake of 1923. An additional notable image is a 2 1/4" x 3 1/4" original snapshot of Indian independence leader Mohandas Gandhi spinning wool, with an identifying inscription in black ink on the verso. Some images have been removed from their mounts and are absent. Much more fascinating content besides, should be seen.
