Description:

INNIS P. SWIFT SENDS HIS 1ST CAVALRY PATCH
INNIS P. SWIFT (1882 - 1953) American general who commanded the 1st Cavalry Division, transforming it from horse cavalry to essentially an infantry division. He led the division in the seizure of the Admiralty Islands. Great grouping includes: war-date T.L.S. as major general on I Corps letterhead, 1p. 4to., June 12, 1945 to an admirer. Swift regrets that he has run out of I Corps shoulder patches, having already mailed out over 100, adding: "Fortunately, I found a shirt of mine that had the 1st Cavalry Division's shoulder patch sewed on it. When I commanded the 1st Cavalry Division I wore this patch...I am sending you the shoulder patch of that famous and well-loved Division". The patch is present, as is Swift's self-censored signed transmittal envelope. On the verso is a letter from Gen. GEORGE W. GRINER (1895-1975) who commanded Army forces at Saipan, on 27th Infantry letterhead, 1p. 4to., June 12, 1945 sending a 27th Div. patch (included). The letters and envelopes have been mounted to an album page at the margins with tape, but letters are not glued down. Patches are pasted between. Some recent damp stains.
