Description:

(1824 - 1900) Union brigadier general who commanded a brigade under Keyes at Malvern Hill and led the 18th Corps towards the end of the war. War date A.L.S. on Headquarters of North Carolina letterhead, 2pp. 4to., New Berne, Feb. 20, 1865, to Governor of New York Reuben E. Fenton (1819-1885) requesting more men for his regiment. In part: '...[I] enclose herewith an official copy of a letter transmitted to me by Maj. Genl. John Gibbon concerning an application made to the Adjutant General of the Army by Captain John C. Lee...asking that order might be given to recruit more companies to fill up that organization...The 99th NY Vols. is now almost extinct. The regiment has done the country good service when in its prime, and I desire very much that it should still live to do even greater service... I beg you will send a few men to fill up the ranks of this regiment...' Multiple tears along creases have been repaired on the verso with tape, else fine.
