Description:

(1900 - 1986) American admiral responsible for the construction of the Nuclear Navy', starting with the submarine Nautilus. Great content T.L.S. on USS NIMITZ letterhead, 4pp. 4to., 'At Sea, North Atlantic', March 3, 1975. This letter, sent to powerful Vermont Sen. George D. Aiken, details the first sea trials of the USS NIMITZ, '..our second nuclear powered aircraft carrier and our seventh nuclear powered surface warship...'. Rickover writes about the improvements made to the USS NIMITZ over the first nuclear aircraft carrier, a brief history of Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, for whom the ship is named, and argues strongly for the necessity of a 'Nuclear Navy' for '...providing the major deterrent to all out nuclear war...'. He writes in part: 'For the foreseeable future the aircraft carrier will be the principal offensive striking arm of the Navy... No other weapon system under development can replace the long-range, sustained, concentrated fire power of the carrier...'. Rickover also spreads fear of an impending 'Soviet threat', arguing that '...the cost of war itself far exceeds any cost needed to be prepared to prevent a war' and concludes in part: 'The Soviets recognize the importance of becoming the world's strongest sea power... it is essential that the ships we do build are the most powerful and effective weapons we know how to build...The alternative is to rely for our security on nuclear weapons; their use could mark the supreme failure of mankind.' Shows original mailing folds, else fine.
