JOHN TALBOT (1384/1387 – 17 July 1453) "Old Talbot" English military commander during the Hundred Years' War, as well as the only Constable of France appointed by the king of England. Fought alongside the Duke of Bedford and the Earl of Warwick with distinction in Maine and at the Siege of Orléans. Also fought at Patay on 18 June 1429 where he was captured and held prisoner for four years. Appointed governor and lieutenant general in France and Normandy, he had a succession of victories over the French, including the 7 July 1440 recapture of Harfleur. Rare, fine content D.S., 1p. 5" x 12" parchment, [n.p.], June 28, 1440. Only days before he would retake the town lost to the French in 1435, Talbot's representative muster-in three mounted lancers and three lancers from the garrison at Gisors, each named: "...to serve in certain campaign against the enemies and adversaries of the king [Henry VI] our Lord, who are occupying Harfleur...". Signed at the conclusion by PIERRE BAILLE, General Receiver of Normandy in the service of the English, THOMAS PECHINGTON, a counselor to Henry VI, and DURANT DE THREMOUILLE. A fine historical document!
