Description: HUMPHRY DAVY
(1778-1829) English chemist and inventor remembered for his advances in the study of alkali metals, and also as the mentor of Michael Faraday. Third person, fine scientific association A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], signed at the top of the first page and additionally "Davy" within the text. In part: "...Sir H. Davy returns his best thanks to Mlle. Duvancel for the memoirs she had the goodness to bring him from M. le Baron Cuvier & the letter from M. [Andre] Ampère. Sir Humphry Davy has been absent from London & returned only yesterday Lady Davy will call on Mlle. Duvencel this morning & Sir Humphry hopes they may have the satisfaction of seeing her at dinner...". Loss at both corners of blank page, else very good condition. French Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) wrote a highly laudatory biographical memoir of Davy, and A. Duvancel (1792-1824), also a naturalist, collaborated with Cuvier in studies of the flora, fauna and languages of the Indian sub-continent. Andre Ampère was also a great admirer of Davy.
