851A. RICHARD M. NIXON (1913 - 1994) Thirty-seventh President of the United States who led during the Vietnam War, re-opened diplomatic ties with China and the U.S.S.R., resigned his office due to the Watergate scandal. Important A.Ms., 2pp. legal folio, his notes for a Sep. 29. 1966 speech he gave at the University of Miami which he titled: "The High Cost of Johnson". According to the typed note of provenance which accompanied the notes, the owner, a professor, met with Nixon and discussed the speech following the address. He notes: "He gave me one page from his speaking notes taken from Teddy Roosevelt's Man in the Arena". One side of the document bears block printing headed "Man in the Arena - T.R." and reads in part: "...It is not the critic who counts...the credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood: who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions...who, at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid should who neither victory nor defeat...". This side of the text is likely in Nixon's hand but we cannot confirm this absolutely, as examples of block text in his hand are excessively rare. The verso bears superb content notes Nixon made to himself and which he likely also used for the speech. In part: "...I [?] to Keynote this convention. 1. 15 years ago - as a Senator. 2. Much has happened to me: I served as V.P. I traveled to [?] I got stoned in Caracas 3. J[ohnson]. C[ongres]s. - have not changed in any respect...Political - non political...I [?] Johnson equal time....I congratulated[?] J[ohnson] C[ongres]s on Viet Nam...We support these goals: We must not appease...We should win air[?] [?]...Shall we go down road to [?]...prepared?...this is Great Society but U.S. became great when great place[?]...". Nixon also added a small doodle within the text. Ink slightly faded, else very good. Nixon spent the years before his 1968 presidential victory campaigning for Republican candidates across the country, presenting the "New Nixon", reuniting the party and wooing conservative Democrats. Of course, Nixon would later title one of his books In the Arena, a series of essays each of which contained anecdotes from Nixon's recollections. Although the essays inform the reader about his life and career, Nixon also gives advice to those who would come after him. $2,000 - 3,000
