HOWARD R. HUGHES (1905-1976) American industrialist and aviator, an eccentric billionaire who controlled RKO, founded the Hughes Tool Corp., and built and flew the enormous airplane "Spruce Goose". Superb content, rare A.L.S. "Howard ", 2pp. legal folio, [n.p., n.d. ca. ca. 1957-65], to his wife, actress JEAN PETERS who also pens much text in this letter between husband and wife. Hughes writes, in small part: "...Dearest Love, I adore you. I was thinking about your mother. I do so little for her - would you mind if I send a wire suggesting that we send a driver to any place along the way...who would pick up her automobile and put her & Red on one of those beautiful brand new jets with the movies just like the president's...tell me when we are together. I love you some more, Howard ". Peters replies: "Dearest - You support her - that's enough - I love you. Hope you will be ready to say goodnight about 11:00...Tomorrow is my birthday - which you will probably forget - like the color sample book - which was not on the table as you promised. I do not expect a present - but please send me some flowers - so I won't be embarrassed... " Hughes concludes the "conversation": "...You were unfair to assume I forgot the samples. I went through the pile of material to my left as you can see from the placement of Newsweek there. I gave samples to Geo. With clear and emphatic instructions to put on your table...This is to avoid any unnecessary walking in hall (footsteps, 'scratching around door', etc ..." A great example demonstrating Hughes reclusiveness and paranoia, even with his wife! Very good to fine. In 1957 Hughes married Peters after her divorce from her first husband, Texas oilman Stuart Cramer. He soon faded from public view and became an eccentric recluse, and the two maintained separate bedrooms and lives until their divorce in 1971, communicating mainly through these notes. After the marriage failed, Peters refused to discuss the relationship in any way. $1,000-1,500
