Description:

HUBERT HUMPHREY
(1911 - 1978) Vice President of the United States under Johnson (1965-69). T.L.S., on White House Senate letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, April 29, 1954, to the honorable James F. Wiseman regarding the Army-McCarthy hearings. In part: '...I am glad to have your comments on the controversy between Secretary of the Army Stevens and Senator McCarthy...Since the whole inquiry is aimed at determining what the facts are...it hardly seems proper to draw conclusions before all the facts have been elicited...'. In 1953 U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy was making inquiries of the Army about supposed communist infiltration, and in turn the Army accused McCarthy of requesting special treatment for Private G. David Schine leading to these hearings. Although Humphrey was part of the Foreign Relations Committee, he had no part of the subcommittee which was formed to investigate this matter. Fine condition. Lot also includes an autopen S.P., 8 x 10 in. b/w, showing Humphrey in a seated pose.
