Description:

Rare complete portfolio of ten satirical prints, entitled "Hitleriada Macabra", by artist Stanislaw Toegel (Celle: Antoni Markiewicz), 1946, each image 9 ½" x 12 ¾" and affixed to a 12 ½" x 17" captioned mount. Each image presents a grotesque depiction of the crimes committed by Wehrmacht and SS personnel during the course of the war, with special emphasis on the brutality faced by Poles imprisoned in the ghettos and concentration camps. Notable subjects include SS chief Henrich Himmler, shown standing over a pile of skulls while leaning on a bloody axe; German officers receiving art stolen from Polish citizens; the mass execution of prisoners by firing squad; SS officers beating a nude girl suspended from a rack; an officer whipping a nude prisoner suspended by his nose; a doctor and several SS officers performing medical experiments at Ravensbrucke; and much else. Each print bears a title at the bottom edge, along with Toegel's printed signature and the date "45". The mount of each also bears the title, as well as a sardonic caption in English and French. The original printed cover is also present, accompanied by a table of contents and a foreword in English, describing Toegel's creation of these subversive images while living under German occupation and, later, while imprisoned in an unnamed concentration camp. It further describes how these and other satirical images were distributed by Polish underground publications. A run of 1,450 copies of this set were produced, although this example is unnumbered. The covers and introductory pages show extensive toning, chips to the edges and adhesive tape residue, while the prints themselves show some minor abrasions and tape residue, else very good.
