Description:

HITLER EJECTS ALBERT EINSTEIN FROM GERMANY
Excessively rare 1934 color postcard, 5.75 x 4 in., an artist's portrayal of a furious Adolf Hitler ejecting brilliant physicist Albert Einstein from Germany. Hitler is shown at right in Brownshirt uniform, his left hand balled into a fist, his right hand pointing in a manner ordering Einstein to leave. Beside Hitler stands another uniformed SA man, and behind the pair is a hand clutching a dagger dripping with blood. Dark clouds drift in the background. At left, Einstein is shown with sun rays emanating from behind him, his hands before him in an imploring gesture. On the verso, the card bears a quote: 'Neither hatred nor persecution can stay the progress of science and civilization', citing the artist's name: 'M[ichael]. Califano', date '1934', and title of the piece: 'The Ignominy of the XXth Century'. Fine condition. Califano was selling the postcards in New York to raise money to help German-Jewish refugees and his studio was raided by Nazi sympathizers who slashed the painting represented on this postcard.
