Description:

HERMANN GORING
(1893-1946) German politician who began his career as an ace in World War I, rose to become Hitler's right-hand man and head of the Luftwaffe, finally captured and committed suicide on the eve of his execution. WHILE PREPARING HIS DEFENSE AT NUREMBERG, GORING CLAIMS THAT ‘THE MAJORITY OF THE AUSTRIAN PEOPLE DESIRED ANNEXATION TO GERMANY…' Historic content, partly-printed D.S. ‘Hermann Goring', 2pp. legal folio, [Nuremburg], Nov. 29, 1945, a 'Defendant's Application for Summons for Witness', in which Goring requests that WARD PRICE, the pro-fascist Chief Correspondent of the Daily Mail newspaper in London, be summoned to give evidence on his behalf. In part, Goring claims: ‘…The witness knows: A) That the defendant Goring has endeavored to always promote German-English understanding before and after the outbreak of war… B) ‘the…majority of Austrian people desired annexation of Austria to Germany and welcomed the marching in of the Germans with tremendous enthusiasm…'. He further states that these facts are relevant because: ‘…they support my contention that I did not wish a War of Aggression and that in the annexation of Austria the population corresponded to my wish…'. Boldly signed at bottom in purple indelible pencil and countersigned by his defense attorney, OTTO STAHMER (1879-1968). It is little surprise that Goring attempted to retain George Ward Price as a witness: Price (1886-1961) was an intimate of Oswald Mosley and supporter of the British Union of Fascists, who also claimed to have a close relationship with Adolf Hitler. He initially worked as a foreign correspondent and, in the 1930s, carried out several interviews with Benito Mussolini and Hitler in which he revealed his pro-fascist leanings. It was to Price, in a March 9, 1935 interview, that Goring announced that Germany was creating a Luftwaffe in violation of the Treaty of Versailles which had prohibited German from having an air force. In his 1937 book ‘I Know These Dictators', Price portrayed himself as a close friend of Hitler, writing: ‘Behind the forceful character which Hitler displays in public, there is a pleasant personality known only to his intimates…'. He was welcomed to interview high-ranking Third Reich figures and over the years, the Daily Express supported Hitler ever more strongly, even becoming an instrument of Nazi propaganda. It is not clear whether Price did act as witness for Goring, but he did so for von Ribbentrop, as did other British fascists. With a carbon copy, not signed. File holes at top, otherwise very good. Ex: the archives of Dr. Hans Werner, who was responsible for directing the printing of the Record of the Trial of Major War Criminals in 42 volumes and in three languages, following the Trials themselves.
