Description:

671. HERMANN GOERING'S LUFTWAFFE EAGLE UNIFORM PATCH An extraordinary relic, a 4" x 1 1/2" embroidered eagle uniform patch, the eagle with wings outstretched, its talons grasping a gold swastika at bottom, all set upon a navy blue felt backing. This fine relic is accompanied by an original signed letter of provenance from USAF Major Gen. HOYT S. VANDENBERG, JR. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., Tucson, [n.d.]. It reads in part: "...The gold Luftwaffe eagle was taken by [my father] General H. S. Vandenberg from the Paris apartment used by Herman Goering. General Vandenberg brought it home to me along with other World War Two memorabilia. It has been in my possession since that time...". Fine condition. Of course, Goering headed the Luftwaffe and this device was of great importance to him. Gen. Hoyt. S. Vandenberg (1899-1954) was Chief of Staff of the 12th Air Force, and in April, 1944 was designated deputy air commander in chief of the A.E.F. and commander of the American Air Component, and in August, 1944 assumed command of the Ninth Air Force. An important, meaningful relic with ironclad provenance!          $3,000 - 4,000
