HENRY WATKINS ALLEN
(1820 - 1866) Confederate brigadier general and the last Confederate governor of Louisiana, serving from January 1864 to May 1865. He escaped to Mexico and lived and worked there until his death. War-date A.L.S. marked ‘Executive Office' at the top margin, 1p. 4to., Shreveport, Louisiana, Sep. 5, 1864. In part: ‘The bearer of this, Mr. A. W. Moffett, has been engaged to take charge of an iron foundry in this city...He has been sent down the river to procure such old iron as may be had...as this business will be carried on under my instructions for the sole benefit of the people of the state, I shall hope that he will be received by them in liberal spirit...Mr. Moffett is authorized to make all needful arrangements for the transportation of material to this city, and his orders in payment will be met by me...'. Signed ‘Henry W. Allen' as governor. Approx. 4 in. tears at the mailing folds, else very good.
