Description:

(1815 - 1872) Union major general who was Lincoln's General in Chief and adviser. He proved to be an effective administrator during the war. Great content, war date A.L.S. on Headquarters of the Department of the Missouri letterhead, 1p. 8vo., St. Louis, July 6, 1862, to Assistant Secretary of War Thomas A. Scott (1823-1881) discussing the ongoing Battle of Fort Henry. In part: ...2nd Ohio and Michigan are not in my department and I have made no arrangements with them. If possible, send troops from them. Fort Henry is being largely reinforced. The bombardment has commenced. Every available man from here and Cairo are sent to the Tennessee. [Gen Don Carolos] Buell unable to move forward...' Very fine condition. The Battle of Fort Henry began the same day as this letter was written when Union gunboats commanded by Flag Officer Andrew Foote shelled the fort while Ulysses S. Grant's forces advanced on the ground. Due to heavy rains on the days leading up to the battle, the water level of the Tennessee River was very high, and the fort was poorly situated along its banks. The Confederate commander Lloyd Tilghman had only nine guns above the water to mount a defense with, and he quickly realized defeat was inevitable. He surrendered the garrison to Foote before Grants troops even arrived on the scene. The surrender of Fort Henry opened the Tennessee to Union ships to push south, and would lead to Grant's famous capture of Fort Donelson one week later.
