(1819 - 1889) Union brigadier general who served as Chief of Artillery for the Army of the Potomac. Broke the Confederate pursuit at Bull Run, and at Fredericksburg his 147-gun battery opened the battle. He is best remembered for commanding the artillery at Gettysburg, helping to repulse Pickett's charge. A.L.S. signed as brevet major general, 1p. 8vo., 'Soldiers House' Washington D.C., Sept. 2, 1887, to contemporary author John W. Weidemeyer (1819-1896) responding to his requests. In part: '...Mr. C.M. Bell photographer will send you this afternoon a photograph of me in accordance with your request...I enclose autograph signatures also...' Expertly inlaid to a sheet, fine condition. One of Hunt's post war activities was serving as governor of the 'Soldiers House' in Washington, a retirement home for veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Over the years its walls have housed presidents and prominent generals alike, most notably Abraham Lincoln who is said to have spent a quarter of his first term there and used it to write the final draft of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight.
