HENRY GARDNER
(1730 - 1782) American Revolution politician who helped organize a provincial congress of New England states in 1774 seeking common defense and welfare of the region. Partly-printed war-date signed broadside "H. Gardner" as Treasurer and Receiver General of Massachusetts, 1p. folio, Boston, Nov. 25, 1780, an order issued to "Constable or Collector" Timothy Hartshorn of Reading that formally instructs him to collect the sum of 8,511 pounds in taxes, with very explicit instructions following as to how these taxes were to be levied. Hartshorn is further instructed that in the case of non-payment, the names of such overdue taxpayers are to be published and if taxes remain unpaid, their land is to be sold to pay the sums due. Folds reinforced on verso, slight toning, else very good.
