Description:

HANS 'ASSI' HAHN AND WALTER OESAU
HANS 'ASSI' HAHN (1914 - 1982) German Luftwaffe ace of World War II with 108 victories in some 560 missions, awarded the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves before being captured by the Russians. Rare war-date D.S., 2pp. large 4to., 'III./Jagdgeschwader Richthofen Nr. 2', Feb. 4, 1942, a 'vorschlag' issued on behalf of Stabsfeldwebel Franz Willinger proposing that he be promoted to the rank of Flight Officer. The pilot's vitals, experience, and qualifications are listed, his personality is praised ('He stands firmly on the ground of the National Socialist world view...') and it is suggested that he needs only a little more social experience. Signed by Hahn at conclusion. Following Hahn's assessment, Major WALTER OESAU confirms that Willinger had completed a training course and was suited for promotion. He too boldly signs the document. WALTER OESAU (1913-1944) was also a brilliant fighter ace who shot down 127 enemy planes in over 300 combat missions and also flew with the Condor Legion. He was killed in action after taking off for battle following an insult by Goering. Another unidentified Luftwaffe officer notes on Feb. 12 that the promotion was granted. Marginal file holes else very good. Willinger himself would become an ace, garnering 10 kills over England and France.
