Description:

GUNTHER HANS VON KLUGE
(1882 - 1944) "Cunning Hans", Nazi general who led a field army in Poland, Belgium, France and Russia where he headed the most powerful army in the center, nearly took Moscow, later committed suicide fearing implication in the July 20 plot. Rare A.L.S. "v. Kluge" in purple indelible pencil, 1p. large 4to., Baden, Mar. 2, 1944. This letter emanates from the correspondence of Hitler's personal physician, DR. THEODOR MORELL, whom von Kluge addresses as "Dear Professor", and is accompanied by von Kluge's holograph envelope addressed to Morell. In part: "...The food at the inn is more than enough...My general health condition has definitely improved, once I resigned myself to those elastic stockings. I am even going along with the boxing exercises. In my opinion, however, this is overkill, particularly the physical exercises in the morning that are getting me sometimes unraveled. There are limits for everything. My digestion is normal, now that the supplements have taken effect...I am hoping soon to be allowed to return...". File holes at left, else fine. On October 27, 1943, Kluge was badly injured when his car overturned on the Minsk–Smolensk road. He was unable to return to duty until July 1944. Dr. Theodor Morell (1886-1948) was Hitler's personal physician from 1937- 1945. Morell is said to have prescribed strychnine, pervitin and a variety of dubious drugs to Hitler during these years. After the war he presented himself as a resistence fighter and his fortune in millions remained untouched.
