War-date manuscript Confederate document, 1p. 8vo., by Lt. Col. Andrew Ewing, Presiding Judge of Military Court of Lt. Gen'l. Polk's Corps, Shelbyville, Jan. 29, 63 concerning guarding court martial prisoners. In part: "...Owing to the increasing business of our Court, the number of Prisoners to be guarded whilst on trial & the witness to be summoned it is necessary to have two Orderlies or Guards detailed permanently to assist the Provost Marshal in the performance of his duties. We suggest the names of Charles Thompson of Co. B 1st Tennessee Regiment and A.C. Edwin just conscripted and not yet assigned to a Regiment as suitable persons to us if consistent with your views...". From the personal papers of Gen. Leonidas Polk. Very good condition.
