Description:

GROVER CLEVELAND POLITICAL CARTOON
An original printed political cartoon demonstrating government reform by Grover Cleveland and his cabinet. The foreground of the image shows politicians Evarts, Reid, Robeson, Logan, Blaine, and Phelps standing on the remains of a bridge ‘Washed Away by the Freshet of Nov. 1884', as they struggle to reach the other side of the river. In the background is Grover Cleveland and his cabinet calmly walking across a ‘Civil Service Reform' bridge, with signs, boards, buildings and flags labeled ‘A Mugwump Engineer', ‘Tariff Reform', ‘Non-Partisan Civil Service', and ‘Good Government'. This cartoon is captioned at the bottom: ‘Two Political Paths - The Democrats have the Mugwump bridge, and a fair chance to reach the goal; but our Republican friends seem to have struck a pretty hard road to travel, just at present.' Drawn by American cartoonist Joseph Keppler (1838-1894). Matted and framed, 27 x 20 in. overall. Fine condition.
