Description:

GOLD MINING IN 1883 IDAHO
A good Western gold mining letter, 9pp. 8vo., written by J. G. Williams, Bosie, June 1, 1883 to his uncle who appears to be financier of a gold mining claim. In small part: "…Mr. Kinser…the man who owns the two claims joining me on the west sent for me to come to Boise as he had a deal on for our Smith Creek claims…I came to meet he and his party…it is to be an out and out sale. The deeds and money have been placed in escrow…if you care to go on and get the required number of men together organize among yourselves send Mr. Mitchell…I would be…pleased to help who ever it might be into the country and be of any assistance…let them look over other claims I have and if I have nothing that they would care to take up. I will do my best to find them something or I will get out this summer and locate some new one for the Co.[mpany]…the 5 claims I showed you…lie about half way between Thunder Mt. and Smith Creek by…two little lakes…there are two up Monumental Creek just above the town…take the 5 on Snow Slide have a well defined ledge about 10 ft wide on top…and prospect well on the surface. You can allow…3 claims in length…the two…just above town have an extra good showing on the surface…these…are surrounded by some of the best property in the camp…has been developed and the deeper the work the better showing and results they have…more than that it joins the famous 'Dewey' mine…it is about 175 miles from Boise to Thunder Mt...I hope you won't give it up whether we do any business or not…it is going to make one of the biggest mining camps in the west. They have started to work on the wagon road and are under bond to have it completed by Sept. 15th…have Mr. Mitchell come out and see the camps…I will promise to show him the biggest mineral belt he ever saw…". Near fine.
