Description:

(GILBERT MOTIER DE LAFAYETTE)
(1757 - 1834) French statesman and military officer who served as a major general under Washington and was instrumental in the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown. An unusual partly-printed invitation, filled out in an unknown hand, 1p. 8vo., Paris, Jan.[?] 8, 1787 in English. The invitation reads, in part: "Marquis de la Fayette's Compliments Wait upon M Monfort and Begs the Honour of His Company at Dinner on Thursday next...". We are unsure of the identity of the recipient, but "Monfort" is likely a misspelling of "Mumford" as the piece originally came out of the Mumford family of New London, Connecticut according to a note from a previous owner that accompanies the lot. Simply framed in a black molding, usual folds, with minor pinholes at intersections, else very good.
