Description:

(1806 - 1878) Confederate major general, who fought at Belmont and was second-in-command at Fort Donelson from which he fled to avoid capture by Grant. Good content war date A.L.S. with fully-signed postscript, 2pp. 4to., Columbia, Dec. 2, 1861, to Confederate Secretary of War Judah Benjamin (1811-1884) regarding the need to appoint a brigadier general for Arkansas. In part: ...The State of Arkansas has from 12,000 to 15,000 men in the Confederate Army. As far as we are advised that state has no Brig. General in the field. It is only right that she should have brigade commander for her own forces. We have in this army Col. Garth....and Col. Tappan both talented and efficient officers would make good brigade commanders...We beg to recommend their approval. In addition...we beg to suggest to you the appointment of Col. Borland...his talents and experience and services we think entitle him to favorable consideration...Col. Garth lives in southern, Col. Tappan in eastern, and Col. Borland in western Arkansas...This recommendation is made without the knowledge of either one of the gentlemen whose names are presented and with the public service alone in mind...' Scattered ink stains, else fine. Of the three men mentioned, only one would ever reach the rank of brigadier general: James C. Tappan (1825-1906), who would serve with distinction in the Trans-Mississippi theater and in Price's Missouri expedition. Tappan would be promoted in November of 1862, one year after this letter. Most regiments from Arkansas were organized in the Army of the Tennessee during the early stages of the war.by Solon Borland (1808-1864), U.S. Senator from Arkansas and Confederate colonel who spent most of the war raising supplies and regiments. He died before the war's end from failing health.
