Description:

GETTYSBURG U.S. PERCUSSION CAP BOX BATTLEFIELD PICK-UP
A superb Gettysburg battlefield relic, a leather U.S. percussion cap box recovered from the battlefield very shortly after the event and retained in a local collection until 2008. The cap box is entirely intact, showing wear only consistent with use on the field. This fine relic was part of the famed collection owned by the Rosensteel and Eckert families of Gettysburg. George D. Rosensteel, a long-time collector, established a Civil War museum in Gettysburg in 1921. He subsequently added the fine collection of his uncle, John H. Rosensteel to the museum's holdings. John Rosensteel had lived through the three days of battle at Gettysburg and began gathering artifacts as soon as the armies left the scene. In 1941, Lawrence Eckert married George Rosensteel's daughter, Angela, and began working at the family's museum. In 1972 the Rosensteel Family donated their collection to the National Park Service who in turn retained Lawrence Eckert as custodian and curator. Additionally, Eckert had assembled his own collection of Gettysburg relics ever since his marriage in 1941. This cap box is from that collection, and is accompanied by a signed and notarized letter of provenance from Eckert's son Richard Eckert, as well as a copy of the auction listing the collection when it was sold in May, 2008. An exception item with iron-clad provenance.
