Description:

437. GETTYSBURG SHENKL CASE SHOT A superb relic recovered from the Gettysburg battlefield, a U.S. 3" Schenkl case-shot shell with the remains of a Schenkl combination fuse in its base. The iron shell measures 3" wide and 9 1/2" tall, and was recovered on the Rose Farm at Gettysburg, scene of heavy fighting on the second day of the battle. Case shot improved on the simple shell by the addition of small lead or iron balls inside a thinner-walled projectile, or case. Case shot almost always used time fuses in order to accomplish its most effective application: exploding in the air above enemy troops so as to decimate their ranks. From the well-known Gettysburg Geiselman Collection, first assembled in the 1920's by John Gieselman who carefully documented the fast majority of his finds. Obtained directly from noted Gettysburg dealers, The Horse Soldier, whose expertise in arms and projectiles is unimpeachable. $1,000-1,200
