Description:

GERMAN VETERAN''S ORGANIZATION STANDARD
Large and elaborate double-sided flag, 49" x 42", the standard of a pre-World War I German veteran''s organization. The obverse of the standard consists of a black-white-and-red Imperial German tricolor in silk, with the black eagle insignia of Prussian King Frederick II embroidered in silk thread and gold bullion at center, within a half-wreath of laurel leaves, embroidered in green silk, and with oak leaves similarly embroidered at the four corners. Around the central motif appears the legend "Mit Gott fur Konig und Vaterland!" (With God for King and Fatherland!"), embroidered in gold bullion thread. The reverse consists of a field of black velvet, bearing at center a finely-embroidered scene of an angel armed with sword and shield, protecting an exhausted German soldier, with a wreath of oak leaves at beneath tied with an Imperial tricolor sash. A shield containing martial imagery, including helmets, rifles, swords, and cannons, appears at each of the four corners. Around the central scene appears the legend "Kameradschaftl. Verein Buisdorf" ("Comeradely Society Buisdorf"), with the dates "1876-1913". This indicates that this was the standard of an organization for veterans of the Franco-Prussian War residing in the small town of Buisdorf in the Rhein-Sieg district. The flag is trimmed on three sides with a 2" braided gold wire fringe, and bears four brass suspension loops at the hoist, with a fifth missing from the top corner. The central white band of the Imperial tricolor on the obverse shows heavy damage, with some slight tears to the silk backing of the martial motifs at the corners of the reverse, but otherwise the standard remains in very good condition, showing strong colors.
