Description:

GERMAN ARMY PORTRAITS AND LITHOGRAPHS
Group of four German military portraits and lithographs, dating from World War I and earlier. Includes: Large color lithograph "Kriegs Chronik" ( "War Chronicle"), 14 1/2" x 19", commemorating the World War I service of a corporal named Faver Wiggenhauser. According to the hand-lettered center section, he was mustered in in 1915, and the document goes on to list his involvement in several important battles, including Verdun, the Somme, and Flanders, surviving through to the end of the war in 1918. Around the edges are depictions of several military subjects, including and infantryman and a cavalryman in Stahlhelm-style helmets, field artillery and a machine gun, a U-boat and a cruiser, a Fokker biplane, and a zeppelin. At the very center is an oval black and white photograph, a chest-up view of Wiggenhauser in uniform. The bottom right corner bears the name of the artist, Anton Hoffman of Munich, while the lower left corner bears the publishing information. The piece is mounted in a black frame. Minor stains, else very good. WITH: Color lithograph, 13 1/2" x 19 1/2", entitled "Mein Soldatenleben" ( "My Military Life"). Attached to the center is a 2 1/2" x 4" b/w carte de visite photograph of a German soldier, unfortunately unnamed. Arranged around the portrait are a number of images of military life, including training, guard duty, celebrations while on leave, weapons drills, and life in camp. At the bottom is a large panel depicting a group of military commanders on a hillside, observing and directing a battle in the valley below. Printed at the bottom is the publisher of the lithograph and the copyright date, 1884. Minor stains, else very good. WITH: Color lithograph, 15" x 19 1/2", depicting the evolution of the uniforms of a regiment of Wurttemberg Dragoons throughout the 19th century, displaying seven different uniform styles. The information at the bottom lists the conflicts and minor battle that the unit participated in, from the 1806 war with Prussia, through to the 1870-1871 war with France. Moderate toning, chipping at the edges, else very good. WITH: color lithograph, 6" x 9", depicting a unit of German infantry, wearing pickelhaube helmets and armed with swords, revolvers, and bolt-action rifles, charging a bridgehead. The image likely depicts a scene from the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71. Matted in cream and mounted in a frame, fine.
