Description:

GEORGE WASHINGTON
(1732 - 1799) First President of the United States and commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. A fascinating Washington document, his endorsement signature "Go: Washington" accomplished on the verso of a manuscript D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p., Virginia], Apr.1 0, 1787, an invoice directed to "The Potomack Company to Thomas Boylan &c" for ten shillings for "Expences [sic], attending the bringing of Corm [?] McCarthy & Hugh Taylor from the Town of Alexandria to the Great falls". On the verso, Washington adds his endorsing signature together with fellow company directors GEORGE GILPIN and JOHN FITZGERALD beneath a docket, "Thomas Boylan's acct. Expences after runaways 10s paid Apr. 17, 1787 Pass'd the 18th Cot. 1787". At the time of this document, Washington was enthusiastically involved as President of the Potowmack Canal Company which sought to build a canal, locks and channels on the Potomac River. Slaves were used in the construction of the canal, and Washington did of course own slaves himself, so it is most likely that the "runaways" referred to here were indeed slaves. The document bears light uneven toning which only marginally affect Washington's clear signature, else very good condition.
