Description:

GEORGE III
(1738 - 1820) King of England during the American Revolution, it was his policies of taxation and repression that led to the uprisings in the Colonies. Handsome manuscript D.S. "George R" as King, 7pp. legal folio, Windsor, July 29, 1809, boldly signed at the top of the first page with a spidery signature as his blindness worsened, with embossed red-wax and white-paper Royal Seal at head below signature. Co-signed by future Prime Minister George Canning as Minister of Foreign Affairs. The sheets held together by black silk ribbon at the left margin. To the Chancellor of Great Britain, John, Lord Eldon, authorizing him to affix the Great Seal of Great Britain to "an Instrument bearing date with these Presents (a Copy whereof is hereunto annexed) containing Our Ratification of a Treaty of Alliance concluded by Our Plenipotentiary and the Plenipotentiary of Our Good Brother The Emperor of Austria duly and respectively authorized thereunto, and signed at London the Twenty Fourth day of April last…". On the concluding 5-1/2 pages of the document the specifics of the articles of the treaty between Great Britain and Austria are spelled out in Latin, defining the roles both would play in the new Europe emerging out of the Napoleonic wars. A fine official historic document executed during the period when Great Britain was gaining a powerful foothold on the Continent through subsidized alliances with foreign powers as well being involved in successful maneuvers against Napoleon on the Peninsula. Minor soiling with light age-toning, otherwise in very good condition.
