Description:

GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S MAP OF THE KUBAN BRIDGEHEAD, JULY 1943
Important Russian campaign map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972), issued by the German Army High Command and depicting the military situation at the Kuban Bridgehead as of July 15, 1943. The printed map is titled: 'Skizze 11: Lage im Kuban Bruckenkopf und auf der Halbinsel Kertsch am 15.7.1943' ('Sketch 11: Situation in the Kuban Bridgehead and on the Kerch Peninsula on July 15, 1943') and was drafted on a scale of 1:1,000,000 and almost certainly of wartime production. This 16.5 x 10.5 in. map depicts the crucial bridgehead and the Kerch Peninsula in the eastern Crimea, along with the Taman Peninsula, 'Bef.d. Krim' (Commander of Crimea), 'Bef.Str. Kerch' (Commander of the Straits at Kerch), 'Rum. Geb. Kps.', Romanian Mountain Corps, multiple German units labeled with corps and division symbols, 17. Armee (which was defending the region), individual and specialized units. Soviet forces are represented as the 'Nordkaukasus Front'. Strong troop concentrations are shown along the eastern side of the Kuban Peninsula, with
reserves, armored reserves, and various brigades aligned against Soviet front lines. Light vertical folds, file holes in blank left margin. In the aftermath of the Battle of Kursk and concurrent with the German withdrawal from the Caucasus region, the Kuban Bridgehead was a precarious defensive zone. It allowed German forces to maintain a foothold on the Taman Peninsula after retreating from the broader Caucasus region. At the same time, the Soviets were preparing for a renewed offensive to eliminate this German presence. The Straits of Kerch of course were critical for supply, evacuation, and amphibious operations. Undoubtedly this map was used for defensive or withdrawal planning as the Germans faced ever-increasing Soviet pressure. By early October, following a massive, prolonged Soviet attack, the Germans would give up the peninsula.
