Description:

GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S MAP OF THE GERMAN RETREAT OVER THE DNIEPER, 1943
Important Russian campaign map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972), titled: 'DAS AUSWEICHEN DER H.G.R. SUD HINTER DEN DNEPR — 24. bis 30.9.1943' ('THE WITHDRAWAL OF ARMY GROUP SOUTH BEHIND THE DNIEPER — 24 to 30 September 1943'), 14 x 10.5 in., a blueprint type printing on a scale of 1:2,500,000 with approximate distances marked in kilometers, almost certainly of wartime production. This operational map shows the strategic retreat of Army Group South from the left bank of the Dnieper River in Ukraine during late September 1943, following Soviet offensives that followed the Battle of Kursk. The retreat was intended to establish a new defensive line along the Dnieper River, a major natural obstacle, in what became known as the 'Wotan Line' defensive plan. The map depicts central and eastern Ukraine, from Chernigov in the north to Melitopol and the Sea of Azov in the south, and includes Kiev, Cherkasy, Poltava, Kremenchug, Dnipro, Melitopol, Nikolaev, Kherson, and Odessa. Soviet bridgeheads across the Dnieper are also shown. Military forces shown include units from Army Group South (e.g., 4., 6., 8. Armies and numerous Panzer, Panzergrenadier, and Infantry divisions and corps which are seen retreating westward toward prepared lines along the Dnieper. Soviet armies and Guards units press in from the northeast and east along the Voronezh Front, Steppe Front, Southwest Front, and South Front, attacking and creating multiple bridgeheads across the Dnieper. Light folds with marginal file holes, else fine. This map illustrates one of the most significant strategic retreats by the German Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front in 1943. While meant to stabilize the front along the Dnieper, the withdrawal ultimately failed to stop Soviet advances, which continued westward into Ukraine in late 1943 and 1944.
