Description:

GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S MAP OF THE GERMAN-HUNGARIAN 1944 UKRAINE COUNTEROFFENSIVE
Important Russian campaign map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972), a blueprint-process map 12 x 21 in. drafted on a 1:1,000,000 scale, undated but clearly of wartime creation, probably by the OKH. The map is titled: 'DAS SCHLIESSEN DER LUCKE ZUR H.G.R. SUDUKRAINE DURCH DEN ANGRIFF DER 1.UNG.ARMEE UND DES III. PZ.KPS. 12.4. BIS 3.5.1944' ('The Closing of the Gap to Army Group South Ukraine by the Attack of the 1st Hungarian Army and the III Panzer Corps — April 12 to May 3, 1944'). This map documents a joint German-Hungarian counteroffensive conducted between April 12 and May 3, 1944, aimed at closing a critical gap between Army Group North Ukraine and Army Group South Ukraine during the Soviet spring offensive of 1944. Its scope encompasses terrain including border areas of present-day Ukraine, Romania, and Hungary, including Kolomyja, Stanislawow, Czernowitz, and Carpathian mountain passes. German units include III. Panzerkorps, 1. Panzerarmee, 4. Panzerdivision, and elements of Heeresgruppe Nordukraine; Hungarian units include the 1st Hungarian Army and 2nd, 6th, and 27th Hungarian Corps; and Romanian units include the 4th Romanian Army. Soviet force is shown at the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts, with arrows indicating pressure from the east and northeast. An inset map shows the strategic situation of Army Group North Ukraine as of 3 May 1944, a much larger scale illustrating major German formations and Soviet pressure across a broader section of the front. By spring 1944, German positions in Ukraine were unraveling due to sustained Soviet offensives. A dangerous gap had formed between German and Russian lines, threatening encirclement of Axis forces in the Carpathian region. The 1st Hungarian Army and III Panzer Corps launched coordinated attacks to prevent Soviet breakthroughs, secure the Carpathian passes and hold the northern flank of Romania. This counteroffensive was part of broader German efforts to stabilize the crumbling Eastern Front in 1944. Their efforts only briefly slowed the Soviet advance. By summer 1944, Romania would flip to the Allies, and the Red Army would continue its westward push into central Europe.
