WITH: Great association T.L.S. 'Buck' on Secretary of Defense letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Washington, July 5, 1949, in part: 'Your good note caught up with me in Cuba where I was spending several weeks with my old friend, Ernest Hemingway...For nearly 25 years, I have hoped that I would be assigned to at least on tour of duty with the 1st Division...it was with utmost reluctance that I asked you in my last letter not to assign me to that duty. That request was not made lightly...General Dahlquist and I are so completely different in temperament and point of view...Of all assignments in the Army today, there is none I would prefer to the First Division...the relations between General Dahlquist and myself have always been good...I believe that Dahlquist and I are far, far apart in our ways of looking at things...'
