CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972) American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. Great lot of fifteen letters sent to and from Huebner, many from prominent American generals and other military officers. Includes: Huebner's letter (unsigned), 1p. 4to., April 10, 1947, congratulating JOSEPH T. MCNARNEY for receiving the second Oak Leaf Cluster to his Distinguished Service Cross, adding 'We miss you terribly, but we are trying our best to carry on'; T.L.S from RAYMOND S. MCLAIN, 1p. 4to., Dec. 23, 1947; T.L.S. 'Joe' from JOSEPH T. MCNARNEY, 1p. 4to., June 9, 1949; T.L.S. 'Joe' from JOSEPH T. MCNARNEY, 1p. 4to., June 16, 1947; A.L.S. 'Hartwell' from CHARLES H. BONESTEEL JR. (1885 - 1964), Major General and once commander of the United States Army Infantry School and the personnel staff section of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force during World War II, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Nov. 8, 1948, whom likely intimately knew Huebner, referring to him as 'Ralph' and adding in part, 'I read about your maneuvers which pleased me greatly...I was so delighted that my Number 1 field soldier got some recognition long overdue him'; Huebner's typed letter (unsigned) to RAYMOND S. MCLAIN, 1p. 4to., Jan. 3, 1948, advising him 'Your new job is a tough one...One thing we must teach our Army is that every officer is in a gold fish bowl...we must not get too thin-skinned'; and much more. File holes, else very good to fine condition.
