(1817 - 1885), American politician from New Jersey; U.S. Senator (1866-69, 1871-77); U.S. Secretary of State (1881-85). Lot of two items, includes: L.S. as Secretary of State, 2pp. 4to., July 17, 1884 re: trade with Central and South America. In part: "...I have to inform you that as soon as instructions are prepared for the Commissioners appointed to ascertain the best modes of securing more intimate commercial relations between the United States and the several Countries of Central and South America, you will be furnished with a copy thereof. The instructions are not yet matured to give you any definite information…". WITH an A.L.S. as Secretary of State, 2pp. 4to. to former Union Brevet Brig. Gen. Adam Badeau, Consul General of the U.S. in Havana, letter of recommendation: "…At the instance of the Honorable Postmaster General I beg to introduce to you by this letter Mr. H. B. Plant, of New York City, President of the Savannah, Florida and Western Railroad and the Southern Express Company, who visits Havana to investigate certain commercial matters…". Two pieces.
