Description:

FREDERICK DOUGLASS
(1817 - 1895) Black-American reformer born a slave, Douglass was instrumental in the creation of the Union Negro regiments which fought with great distinction during the war. Good content hand-written and signed letter, as "Fred''k. Douglass", one page, approx. 6" x 8", Washington, D.C., Feb. 27, 1880. Douglass apologizes for being unable to provide his unnamed correspondent with a copy of his autobiography, in full: "...I am obliged by your favor and would gladly put you on the track if I could. The book for which you enquire has been out of print since the war, and I know not where to direct you to find one. I shall by and bye reprint it and bring my story up to the present time..." Douglass signs at the conclusion, adding "Respectfully yours". Douglass refers to his two previous autobiographies, "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave" and "My Bondage and My Freedom", both of which omitted important information about his life as a slave and his escape from slavery which could have endangered him and his family. In 1881, Douglass would duly publish his third autobiography, "Life and Times of Frederick Douglass", which in addition to his early life also discusses his activities during and after the Civil War, including his meetings with presidents Garfield and Lincoln, and his service as a U.S. Marshall. The letter is matted and framed with the title page of the 1882 edition of the book, as well as a chest-up b/w photographic portrait. Folds, else very good.
