Description:

FREDERICK-ARMOND DE SCHOMBERG, 1ST DUKE SCHOMBERG
(1615-1690) German-born professional soldier officer who served in six different armies throughout Europe and was second in command in William of Orange's invasion of England. Became Commander in Chief of the British corps Ireland in 1689 and was shortly after killed in action at the Battle of the Boyne against the French-English Catholic army. Exceedingly rare manuscript L.S. signed with the German variant of his name 'Schonberg', 1p. legal folio, Lisbon, March 5, 1664. While in command of the Portuguese Army, Schomberg writes to an unnamed royal: '…I am thankful to your Excellency for the favor you did me in delivering me from the difficulty I am in. I hope your Excellency has a safe arrival and much success in his negotiations, being certain of his zeal for the good outcome of these matters and that will prove to bring peace to this Kingdom which, although I am a soldier, I would like to see achieved. I would very much have liked to have been able to talk with your Excellency and learn from him the news from the King and to inform him of news of this country...'. With full transcription. In 1659, Schomberg was sent to Portugal as a military advisor with the secret consent of King Charles II as a military advisor. There he took command of the English Brigade during the Portugal Restoration War and, with António Luís de Meneses, won the Battle of Montes Claros on June 17, 1665. Offered with: an oval tortoiseshell hinged case measuring 4.5 x 3 in., which previously held a porcelain portrait of Schomburg, date unknown. From the estate of Helen M. de Kay and sold by Parke-Bernet, Dec. 9, 1966, with a copy of the receipt for both items. Very few Schomberg letters have come to market in the last 20 years, making this a rarity indeed.
