Description:

FREDERIC GAETAN, MARQUIS DE LA ROCHEFOUCAULD
(1779-1863) French nobleman, a monarchist who, after the ascent of Napoleon, attempted to organize an army to restore the throne of Louis XVIII. Interesting A.L.S.1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d. but docketed 1843], in French to an unnamed correspondent. The Marquis offers his box for the premiere to an unnamed guest who had expressed interest in attending a performance starring Marie Dorval in a "new piece...". Marie Dorval (1798-1849) was a popular French actress. She had a close and possibly amorous relationship with George Sand, who wrote roles for her, and their friendship was the subject of rumors chronicled by Gautier and Balzac, among others. Tape remains at top corners, a bit of tearing at top left corner and one marginal, else very good.
