Description:

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT (1882 - 1945) Thirty-second President of the United States who instituted the "New Deal" programs and who led the United States through most of World War II. T.L.S. as Assistant secretary of the Navy on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, July 28, 1920 to retired Adm. John C. Watson. The future president thanks Watson for his letter and expresses the "personal affection and admiration" which he has always held for Watson. He states it had been a great privilege to be associated with Watson "and the finest service in the world. My only regret is that I have to leave it, but if things go well in November, I am looking forward to years to come, during which we shall be in Washington together..." Very good. JOHN C. WATSON (1842-1923) commanded the USS OREGON as his flagship during the Battle of Santiago, Cuba, in which the Spanish squadron under Admiral Pascual Cervera was destroyed. Roosevelt ran as the vice presidential candidate with James M. Cox in 1920, but was defeated by Republicans Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge in the presidential election by a wide margin, as the Republican ticket carried every state outside of the South.
