(1882 - 1945) Thirty-second President of the United States who instituted the 'New Deal' programs and who led the United States through most of World War II. Great content T.L.S. as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Oct. 15, 1942, addressed to a sick child named 'Shippy Swift', hospitalized at the Long Branch Memorial Hospital in New Jersey and likely stricken with polio. In full: 'My dear Shippy: Because of my sympathetic interest in what one of your admirers has told me about you, I am sending you this little personal note of encouragement and hearty good wishes. I know that you will be very brave in your efforts for improvement in your health.' Roosevelt signs at the conclusion in black ink. Lightly toned, one central fold, else fine condition. Loosely matted to a total size of 9 x 12 in. Roosevelt, who was paralyzed due to polio, became a staunch advocate for those suffering from the disease, starting a rehabilitation center in Warm Springs, Georgia and founding the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.
