Description:

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT BRONZE STAR CITATION ISSUED TO A CIVILIAN, WITH MEDAL
(1882 - 1945) Thirty-second President of the United States who instituted the "New Deal" programs and who led the United States through most of World War II. Extraordinarily rare D.S. as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, [n.d., ca. early 1945], a "CITATION FOR THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL", the only such citation we've ever seen authentically signed by Roosevelt, and this example issued to a civilian! The recipient is Mr. Warren G. Fugitt, a volunteer ambulance driver for the American Field Service. The citation details how on Feb. 6, 1944 at the hard-fought Anzio beachhead, Fugitt was returning to a forward aid post to evacuate casualties. Upon arriving at a dressing station, he observed heavy machine gun fire across the road from the aid post, and proceed thereto alone. Fugitt drove through the intense fire, in total darkness, until his ambulance became bogged down in a shell hole. The account continues: "...Each time Mr. Fugitt tried to extricate the vehicle, he drew fire from an enemy machine gun, and during one attempt, received a head wound...He then drove his damaged vehicle back to the Dressing Station, stopping several times along the way to collect wounded soldiers. Mr. Fugitt borrowed a truck and, in spite of his wound, returned to the forward Aid Post to evacuate the wounded throughout the night...". Some soiling, largely at margins, laid down and set into a simple frame, else very good. Accompanied by Fugitt's cased Bronze Star medal, chest ribbon, and pin. The Bronze Star is intended to be awarded only to members of the military, and on only the rarest occasions, by presidential order, may it be given to a civilian.
