Description:

HARLAN NELSON HARTNESS (1898 - 1986) Highly-decorated Brigadier General, Assistant Commanding General and later Commanding General of the 26th 'Yankee' Infantry Division during World War II, which fought in the Battle of the Bulge and liberated Gusen concentration camp with the 11th Armored Division. He later served as the Commanding General of the 7th Infantry Division in Korea between 1946 and 1948, then as the Commanding General of the 4th Infantry Division between 1950 and 1953, ending his military career as Director of the Office of Armed Forces Information & Education, Department of Defense (European Command). Good grouping of three uniforms, worn by Hartness as Commander of the Fourth Division in the early-1950s, when the division was deployed to Germany as the first of four American divisions committed to N.A.T.O. during the early years of the Cold War. The lot includes: his khaki uniform, ca. 1950s, bearing a Forth Army insignia patch on the left upper sleeve. Bears two reissue ink stamps on the interior of the collar. Sold with matching trousers, bearing numerous reissue ink stamps and the hand-inked name 'Hartness' on the lining. Interestingly, one side pocket contains a small hand-sewn packet of cloves, which Hartness (and others) believed would bring luck, fortune, and protection from harm. Some small tears and moth nips, else very good. Sold with matching khaki tie, twice-inscribed 'HG6863' with some spots of staining. Sold with his khaki garrison cap, bearing worn light blue piping and silver Major General's stars pinned to a side curtain. The interior of the cap is size-stamped '7-1/8'. WITH: his ca. 1951 US Army, 'Shirt, Field, Wool, Olive Green 108, Spec. MIL-S-10858 (QMC), Pattern Date: January 29, 1951, N.Y.Q.M.P.A.', sold with matching unissued trousers, neither named upon cursory investigation. The uniform also includes a one-piece Fifth Army patch and a one-piece 26th 'Yankee' Infantry Division patch. WITH: another khaki uniform, bearing a pair of 'U.S' insignia pins affixed to the upper lapels and a pair of Major General's stars pinned to each shoulder strap. The left upper sleeve bears a Fourth Army insignia patch. The interior of the shirt bears the numeral '2' inscribed near the neck, and bears Hartness's hand-inked name ONCE on the collar and TWICE near the waist. Sold with a matching pair of trousers, named 'Gen. Hartness' in blue ink on the lining, as well as a khaki tie. Notable spots of mothing throughout, just good condition. This jacket was taken from a large grouping of Hartness's uniforms consigned to us from a prominent private collection on public display, many of which bear his name. Adding further provenance, the tunic is sold with assorted newspaper clippings and photographs clearly collected by Hartness from the early 1950's period when he was with the Fourth Infantry Division, as well as a wealth of biographical information.
