Description:

"FOUR SEASONS OF KYOTO" JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTS BY UCHIDA
Complete set of four Japanese woodblock prints, each 8 1/4" x 11" and mounted in a 10" x 14"mat, by TOKURIKI TOMIKICHIRO (1902-2000), and printed by the Uchida company of Kyoto, circa 1950. Each finely executed and colored print depicts a scene from a specific location in Kyoto during each of the four seasons: the print for spring depicts cherry blossoms at the Heian Shrine; that for summer shows the Sanjo Bridge in the evening; that for fall shows the Kyoto Imperial Palace ; and that for winter shows the Kiyomizu-dera temple during a snowfall. Each print bears the artist's printed signature and seal with the publisher's mark of Uchida, as well as a number on the verso indicating the print's position in the set. The verso of each print also bears a pencil inscription indicating the set number and identifying the scene and the artist, as well as a black ink "SAMPLE" stamp. These prints were salesman's samples acquired by a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Thomas Hood, who sold these prints in the eastern United States on behalf of Uchida. These are excellent examples of "Sosaku hanga" prints, which were produced based on a Western model of printmaking, in which the artists retained creative control over their works, and which utilized a unique synthesis of Japanese and Western aesthetic techniques. Some slight toning, else very good to fine. Sold without the original paperboard folder.
