Description:

An extremely fine NSDAP/Third Reich banner, 50 in. x 35 in., one sided velvet construction, hand-stitched and embroidered with a large gold German eagle with swastika at center. The top of the banner has been folded over and sewn to create a loop through which a pole would have passed to suspend the piece vertically. The entire bottom of the banner also has been folded over and sewn and is stitched with woven gold bullion tassels. The back of the banner is slightly worn, most likely from use, otherwise very good condition. Period photographs show similar banners being displayed in the Munich Opera house before it was destroyed by Allied bombs in 1942. From a large grouping of 'liberated' relics consigned to us from the estate of Captain Augustus B. Hill, the Chief of Real Estate and Land Resources Branch of the Bavarian occupation government - within which Munich was the largest city. Sold with a scanned copy of a letter of provenance from our consigner, who describes how Hill's property ended up in his collection.
