Description:

(FLYING TIGERS) FLIGHT MAP AND INSIGNIA
Combat-used flight map and shoulder insignia owned by Flying Tigers pilot First Lt. Ronald Shepherd during his service in China. Included is a map showing the 'Lo River' issued 1942, 39 x 28 in., an aeronautical chart showing principal roads, cities and towns, topographical details, etc. In addition, Shepard added in ink and colored pencil railroad lines, encircled cities (probably targets), distance radii, a compass rose, etc. It appears that Shepard was given free rein to attack targets within his aircraft's range as delineated by the radii. A significant portion of the map has been covered in tap long ago, though whether this was sone pre-flight is unknown. Obvious signs of use including heavy folds, soiling, pencil notes, and a large chip from the top margin. SOLD WITH: Shepherd's C.B.I. shoulder patch, theater-made, 3.25 in. tall, silver bullion embroidered onto white and blue cloth all set onto white fabric. Two pieces. First Lt. Ronald Shepherd, A.A.C. (13112468, born 1920) was a native-born Englishman from Yorkshire who moved in his youth to the Philadelphia area. Part of his extensive fighter pilot training was at Maxwell Field, Alabama until he was activated on Jan. 7, 1944 to serve with the 92nd Fighter Squadron, 81st Fighter Group, 12th Air Force, considered part of the later ‘Flying Tigers.' The squadron served extensively in China supporting the Nationalists, as well as in India, and it operated from bases in Karachi, India, 22 Mar 1944; Kwanghan, China, 15 May 1944; and Fungwanshan, China, 12 Feb 1945.
