Description:

Fine 18th-century German flintlock dueling pistol, 9 1/2" barrel, 16" overall, bearing the maker's name "I. Christoph Kuchenreiter" finely inlaid in silver along the top panel of the octagonal barrel. The barrel is additionally decorated with stylized inlaid silver foliate patterns, with a polished brass or possibly gold disc inlaid at the top of the breech end, depicting a prancing horse and rider over the maker's initials "I C K". The stylized numeral "1" appears behind the barrel screw, indicating that the pistol was originally sold as part of a pair. The breech end of the barrel is also fitted with a rear notch sight with two folding blades for different adjustments, with the base of the foresight inserted into a dovetail groove at the muzzle, but with the blade apparently ground off. The lockplate, cock, frizzen, trigger guard and butt cap are all iron, with the two lockplate screws framed with flower-shaped bone inlays. A small oval nickel plate appears on the wrist, and a brass-capped wood ramrod, possibly a replacement is secured beneath the barrel by an iron tube. The hammer spring remains strong, but the hammer will not stay cocked. The bore, approx. .50-caliber, shows oxidation overall, with faint rifling still apparent. The external metalwork remains dark overall as originally finished, with very little visible oxidation. The stock shows old, well-repaired cracks before the lockplate and behind the muzzle. NRA grade good to very good.
