FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE ARMY WAR COLLEGE RECORDS UNION DESERTERS!
Samuel Baldwin Marks Young (1840-1924) Army officer, first president of the Army War College, first Chief of Staff of the United States Army. Entered the 12th Pa Infantry as a private in 1861, eventually brevetted to Brigadier General before receiving a regular Army commission. Superb content, war-date L.S. "SBM Young" (as major) 1p. 4to., Camp Stoneman, Washington, D.C., June 30, 1864, reporting to his command on several deserters during the Richmond-Petersburg campaigns. In part: "I have the honor to forward you the following names of enlisted men that have been dropped from my rolls as Deserters, viz: George McFarland 1st Penn Cavy Recruit, William Hartman, 1st Penn Cavy Recruit...". According to official records, both McFarland and Hartman enlisted into M Company, 1st Pa. Cavalry in May of 1864; records concerning date and method of discharge were unknown. Slight foxing and toning with folds, very good. Included with this lot is a Union discharge paper and two muster rolls from 1865.
